spectacular garlic scapes
When I was at my parents’ home my dad had saved the garlic scapes for me to harvest. Not everyone realizes how wonderful these shoots of the garlic plants are. The plant puts these shoots up and if they are allowed to stay they bloom and then bubils form. Then you can plant (or eat) these bubils but then the plant puts more energy into these instead of forming the bulb of garlic.
Well, my dad welcomed me home showing his bounty of garlic (most of which he never planted). Before the children and I left we cleared his volunteer beds out of the scapes. Our hands smelled like garlic and started making plans for how these scapes would be used this week.
Tonight we used five of them for dinner (and leftovers of tomorrow). My 9 year old daughter was soooo excited…she plans to make some garlic potato soup with some of the scapes later this week to welcome her daddy home.
Today I am thankful for garlic scapes that my dad saved for us to harvest.
Just a quick note to say I am really enjoying your “year of thanksgiving” posts, including this particular post. Thank you.
Thanks Todd! It has been good to take the time and remain in Thanksgiving even when things have been rough.
I used to hate the smell of garlic but I love to eat them anyway.
