great value

May 23, 2011
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
~J.R.R. Tolkien

I find great joy in these valuables in my pantry.

I probably hoard them for too long…but I have started to empty these shelves and I am thankful for every morsel God has blessed us with.

A few weeks ago as I was looking at these shelves I saw the tomatoes my dad harvested for me and the grape juice my grandma used to make and thought of Grandpa. So, I pulled down two of those jars of tomatoes and made my grandpa’s stew. Other local and stored highlights included Farmer Lynn’s beef, our homegrown and canned green beans as well as my frozen carrots, peas and corn (my dad harvested the corn too).

These stored ingredients and my cupboards’ contents required a few changes, but it was wonderful and I thought of Grandpa, Grandma, and Dad with each bite.

…great value indeed.
